Anyone with an interest in learning and contributing to scientific research is invited to join the Vital Signs community. We are a mix of students, educators, professional scientists, and citizen scientists from across Maine (now spilling into southern New England and New York). We’re working together to collect, analyze, and share critical environmental information about freshwater, coastal, and upland habitats, and to create authentic learning environments for our next generation of scientists and active, aware citizens.

I wish we had this in the Great Lakes! I know there are great tools like MISIN, but what’s neat about this crowdsourcing site for invasives is that it has a great platform for really getting the general public and schools involved. Users can setup “missions” to examine specific questions about invasives and recruit others to collect data needed to answer those questions. They’ve also got a section to make videos and comics based on their crowdsourcing efforts. Since I’m not in Maine, I didn’t walk through the whole process of submitting data (don’t want to spoil their database with dummy data) but it does look very easy to submit information. They have very thorough documentation for both kids, teachers and the general public.
